VE Day 80th Anniversary

Appleton celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 5th May 2025. This was a particularly important anniversary, as it's probably the last one where veterans can be thanked in person.

The village held an event in the garden of The Plough - many thanks to Rob for coping with his own invasion, and for the barbecue - on a 1940s theme. Green Appleton had a stall, taking the theme "Make Do and Mend" - a campaign run by the government in WW2 to use garments as much as possible to cope with fabric shortages. We thought this theme chimed with our own aims of sustainable living, so we had three activities reusing fabric and buttons - making a button bracelet, a denim purse and a 1940s style headscarf.

All three proved very popular, and we were kept busy all afternoon. We hope that this helped people realise that they can make things themselves, and that cloth and buttons are still useful when the garment is no longer.
