WoodFest is a biennial event held by the Besselsleigh Wood Group to invite people into the woods to take part in some nature-themed activities, or eat and enjoy being outdoors. Green Appleton is affiliated with the Wood Group, so we went along and organised some nature-based activities for children
We were lucky with the weather, as apart from a small downpour before activities started the rain held off. Attendance was light to start with, but as people finished their lunch and wandered over the event busied up.
People from the Earth Trust came along, to talk about what they do. Tim from the Earth Trust led a guided walk around the woods, pointing out interesting features and explaining what they'd like to do in terms of managing the woods.
Other activities included story telling, wild living, and the ever-popular barbecue and cake stall.
Green Appleton showed video clips from the camera trap they have deployed around the woods, which appealed to adults and children alike. There was also a scavenger hunt, with sweets as a prize and animal outlines to make into nature pictures.
Altogether, the event was a great success, and the Wood Group made enough money to buy more hard core to continue the task of upgrading the paths through Besselsleigh Woods.
